Unhappy Burnt piston ring: Rebuild or replace engine?

I've got a 2008 Sentra and a dad's nightmare:
The car I sent off to college with my daughter was driven for over 8 months without an oil change and was diagnosed with a burnt piston ring* by a local mechanic when it started to run rough.

*(Caveat: I've yet to start and/or diagnose the car myself)

I hope to rent a truck, tow the car home, and get it to my trusted local mechanic.

If the second opinion is in agreement, do I:
1) Get the engine rebuilt by the mechanic
2) Get the engine rebuilt by the local dealership
3) Have the mechanic replace the engine
4) Have the local dealership replace the engine

I've done brake jobs, oil changes, alternators, even a timing belt before...but I'm not going to rebuild or replace an engine and would like to get advice on my best option.
